AV talks : When you start to feel a bit better from depression

31 – “The clouds are gone, it’s clear” – Brighter Days – Ronan Keating

It’s difficult to explain how it feels when the cloud shifts and I start to feel a little better. For me it’s not a gradual thing, it really is as quick as a switch – there’s no slow build up to noticing that things are less difficult, no gentle improvement, I literally wake up one morning and am aware that the darkness has gone.

That’s not to say that I feel ‘normal’ again, far from it, but yep folks I am currently back in control of my life and no longer fighting daily battles against my own brain.

Knowing someone with a mental illness

29 – “Tell me what I’m supposed to do” – Worry About You – Tyler James

8 – 14 May 2017 is Mental Health Awareness Week – 7 days – 7 blogs -7 Mental Health topics

Today – Knowing someone with a Mental Illness

I imagine that living with me can be pretty awful at times for my whole family, but my Husband especially. Whilst I try to keep the smile and cheerful Mum face on for my girls, it can be so exhausting that I can’t always manage it for him too. There are days when he has to care for both our children because I don’t have the energy, days when we have to cancel any plans to go out because the thought of stepping outside the front door sends me into a blind panic, days when he has to put up with me barely speaking a word because the fog is so thick I can’t think straight. He will always tell me that he loves me, that he doesn’t mind doing all the extra stuff when I can’t, but I am aware of the strain my illness puts on our relationship, and the effect it has on our family as a whole. 22 – “With a friend at hand you will see the light” – Friends – Elton John

I have a small but perfectly formed circle of good friends who I can trust with anything, and who, no matter how hard I push away, will not budge. They have seen me at my lowest and stuck around waiting for me to stick my head out of the hole again. Our friendships have been changed because of my illness though, and it makes me really sad to acknowledge that. What Would Steve Jobs Do? How to Recover as an Entrepreneur After a Setback

Here’s a story for anyone currently facing a difficult time on the journey to career success. The year was 1985. A young business man was fired from his job at a computer company in California. He had no college degree and had just barely turned 30 years old. His mind was full of innovative ideas, but he was told he was too reckless to ever run his own business.

That man was Steve Jobs.

Of course, you don’t need me to tell you that Steve Jobs eventually recovered from his devastating career setback. As we all know, he later went on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. Continue reading “What Would Steve Jobs Do? How to Recover as an Entrepreneur After a Setback”

Is depression a battle?

21 – “I just want to live while I’m alive” – My Life – Bon Jovi

I can’t believe we’re almost at the end of February already. It doesn’t seem very long ago at all that we were all caught up in the chaos of Christmas and I was wondering how I was going to keep the smile believable throughout it all.

New year was difficult

New Year was a difficult time personally, I found it very hard to be around all the positives of people making New Year’s Resolutions to improve their lives or achieve more in 2017. All I wanted was to wake up and have the darkness gone, to be free from the cloud that hung over my head like the rain clouds in cartoons which pour down on one character, while the rest of the world is in glorious sunshine. It goes without saying that 1st January 2017 started just the same as 31st December 2016 ended, the depression didn’t magically disappear just because the date changed. Valentines’ Day – Love and Relationships

Valentine’s Day is here once more, and the shops are filled with red roses, bottles of fine wine and cards galore to help us say ‘I love you’ to that special someone.  For those already in a relationship, it is an opportunity to reaffirm feelings for a partner, while others may end their Valentine’s card with a cryptic ‘Love, ??? xxx’, possibly hoping that their affections will be discovered by the recipient.

Why finding purpose can be so important and how to find yours

One day, after my wife and I had been shopping in London, we returned to London Victoria station and looked for an empty seat whilst we waited for our train to arrive at its platform. Usually, when I am free, I would tend to look down at my phone and take in ridiculous amounts of information from various facets, but this time, like my wife often does, I began to observe other people going about their daily lives. Friends shaking hands, businessmen rushing about, weaving in and out of the masses of crowds, others reading newspapers intently with their legs folded, people sitting high above the open square in the Weatherspoons pub, relaxing with a pint of the finest beer, also observing others walking by and teenagers in a large group all focused upon their smart devices, smiling and seeking approval amongst one another.

What became evident to me, something that many of us don’t often think about, was that each person was going about their life with a goal, purpose or ambition in mind. Not one person was just wandering aimlessly.

We are so focused on our own lives, struggles, strains (and goals) that we forget that every single person around us is also experiencing similar feelings and human impulses to live our lives with a purpose. In this blog post I intend to discuss the important of finding purpose, what purpose might mean for different people and how to go about discovering your own.
